On 28 December 1895, in a basement in Paris, the Lumière brothers charged admission to watch short films of ordinary life: workers leaving a factory, a train arriving. People had seen moving pictures before. This was the first time a public sat down and paid to watch them as a show.
Public cinema began as a paid sitting, not as the invention of the camera.
