Alexander Graham Bell received the United States patent for the telephone on 7 March 1876. The fight over who first sent a voice down a wire has never really ended. The patent did something narrower: it put one name, and one date, on the legal claim.
The famous telephone date is a patent, not the first voice on a wire.
