Darley and Latané found that a person is less likely to help when they believe other people are also present. Responsibility thins out across the group. The popular story attached to this research, about a murder that a whole neighborhood ignored, has been challenged on the facts. The lab result is the part to keep: a crowd can make each member feel less called.

People help less when they think someone else in the group will do it.

For a long time, voting was public. A landlord, a boss, or a party agent could watch the hand or the voice. The secret ballot, sometimes called the Australian ballot, spread because privacy was the point: a vote you cannot prove to a patron is a vote the patron cannot buy with a look. Secrecy here is not shame. It is the condition of an honest choice.

The secret ballot exists so nobody powerful can watch how you vote.
